From Open Learning to Social Learning

Online learning can be quite a solitary activity, and all the early Massive Open Online Course providers missed the opportunity to incorporate social elements into their learning experience. When I took over product leadership of iversity, I moved the platform from solitary learning to social learning. After defining a social learning paradigm for course design, we implemented several elements such as messaging, following each other and sharing assignments with the community. We also implemented several game mechanics to improve learner motivation. Implemented over the course of three years, the social approach made co-creation and collaborative learning the heart and soul of the iversity experience and became a competitive advantage that opened new doors for collaborations and partnerships.
